30 Morbid Minutes: A New Audio Podcast

Big announcement today! I’ve spent the last few months developing and working on a new podcast called 30 Morbid Minutes. It’s been professionally fulfilling and personally fun, not to mention a joy to work on alongside my friend, co-host, and after-life partner in crime, Jessica Vasami.

Each episode of 30 Morbid Minutes investigates a morbid and macabre topic, person, place or event, pulled from history and the headlines of today; a curious examination of the dark side of life, if you will. Yes the material can get heavy, and the research dense, but there’s humor along the way (when appropriate!).

You might be asking, “why THIS podcast, you creeps?” Well, let us explain!

30 Morbid Minutes unites my general interest in all things macabre and spooky (you got me there) with Jessica’s insatiably curious personality. Fun fact about me: I’m an awful sleeper and often find myself awake at 3 AM spiraling down Wikipedia and Reddit rabbit holes, reading about some stuff that quite frankly no one should do at any time of day. And Jessica’s just so darn curious that she can’t help but ask a gazillion questions, so she’s the ideal candidate and journalist buddy.

Even though I feel like I know some of these topics, after doing the research it’s clear that we’ve still so much to uncover. And our first season certainly runs the gamut. We explore everything from sleep paralysis demons, to obituary bandits, to spirit and Ouija boards, to Victorian funeral customs, and more. Far from the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the bottomless well of creepy and unexplained topics, I know, but that’s what season two is for!

And now for a disclaimer. The goal of this podcast isn’t just to satisfy some morbid curiosity, or grisly fascination, or to sensationalize. At the heart of 30 Morbid Minutes is a study of human nature, of history, of mores and culture. The topics we explore serve as a catalyst for introspection and critical analysis of our world, be it good, bad, or somewhere in the gray. And it’s a teaching and learning place; I know I’m personally learning a lot while researching and writing the show, while also really enjoying the process.

So subscribe on your podcast platform of choice and join us on this informative albeit unsettling journey.

Funhaus Live at the Globe Theater!

“Everyone was Funhaus” this past Saturday night at the Globe Theater in the heart of Downtown LA as we took to the stage for our first live show in over two years. Although part of A Very Normal Podcast Tour, it’s clear that the Funhaus show was anything but. And it was awesome.

The energy from the crowd was electric, and we all had a fantastic time performing as well as watching our friends from Idiots & A Broad open the show with an amazing cameo for Jacob (Mark Hamill). Mount Up for Morbius said goodbye to our favorite living vampire, What A Show improved lives in real-time, and Ryan told us his real true Hollywood story. I’d like to say thank you to everyone who came out to see and support the show — you make this all possible!

Dungeons & Daddies Special Guest Appearance!

There are few folks that bring me to laughter as easily as the Dungeons & Daddies cast. Writers by trade, they’re as quick on their feet as they are funny, which makes roleplaying an absolute gas. It also helps that I consider them all “IRL” friends, some of whom I’ve known now for the better part of my ten years living in Los Angeles. I’ve had the pleasure of joining Will, Freddie, and Matt in their now sunset yet beloved podcast, Story Break. I’ve appeared in Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’, Anthony’s sketch comedy series that instilled me with confidence that gaming and comedy can mingle in a genuine and hilarious way.

And last but I assure you, not least, there’s the one-of-a-kind writer and poet-extraordinaire, Beth May. Beth’s not only one of the most hilarious and brilliantly-brained people you’ll meet in this town, but a damn fine volleyball and hiking partner, Vertical Limit purist, supportive and thoughtful friend, and I think we can all agree, the star of the show!

If I get a chance to spend time with this crew, I LEAP at it, which is why the obvious answer was ‘yes’ when Anthony asked me to play a guest role in the new season of “that-which-is-not-a-BDSM” podcast.

Season 2 of Daddies follows the grandkids of their Season 1 characters, who are now tasked with fixing the world their grandparents kinda jacked up. In my episode, the teens become embroiled in an investigation concerning missing body parts. I encourage you to go listen to the entire series if you’re a newcomer; you won’t be disappointed.

I really can’t emphasize enough what a fun challenge it is collaborating with this team. I laugh SO much. I push myself to do good character and story work while my brain is moving a million miles a second because I’m desperately trying to keep up and do them proud. It goes without saying, BUT I’LL SAY IT: I’m honored to be canonically cemented in something so special, and humbled that these talented people trust me not to blunder their beloved show.

Thank you to the Dungeons & Daddies crew for making this all so much fun, and to the community for welcoming me with open arms!

You can listen to the episode I guest in here, and Apple iTunes, Spotify, and Acast.

Meet me in KOLLOK

If you don’t know Hyper RPG, there’s no better time to familiarize yourself than now, with the third season of KOLLOK underway. This ain’t your mama’s tabletop roleplay game — first of all, it’s real heavy. The third season drives the show to new terrain, taking the story into an alternate timeline dystopian science fiction horror setting.

I’m so honored to be joining in on the fun this time around, bringing infamous NPC and clone Clarity Seven to life, in the flesh. Given that I tend to gravitate to goofier, comic roles, getting inside this headspace and dark roleplaying arena is a new challenge for me. Especially stepping into the legacy of a character with so much… shall we say, “baggage?” Thankfully our troop is led by expert GM and storyteller Zac Lim Eubank (Critical Role, Geek & Sundry), and I’m arm-in-arm with some of the best performers in the biz; Danielle Radford, Ethan Nestor, yellowspoongirl, and Xu Mason, who make the work on-camera look easy, and the time spent off-camera an absolute treat. We look to guidance in KOLLOK veterans Mika Midgett, Aabria Iyengar, and Lucas Eubank, and the entire production is overseen with the expert guidance of Hyper CEO, Malika Lim Eubank. You need only watch the show to see the creativity and elevated production value that the entire crew bring to this project.

KOLLOK airs on AMC’s Fear HQ Twitch channel (twitch.tv/fearhq), live, every Monday evening, starting at 6pm PT / 9pm ET.

Arcadegeddon: My First Game Writing Gig

I’ve always wanted to write professionally but never imagined that I could cross the threshold into video games. Little did I know how fun and rewarding it would be. I’m truly glad and forever grateful that Illfonic, a game developer and publishing studio with operations in Colorado, Washington, and Texas, approached James and me with the opportunity to write on their most recent title, Arcadegeddon.

Arcadegeddon is a cooperative multiplayer shooter with a mix of PVE and PVP, that tells the story of Gilly, a struggling arcade owner in Super City, fighting to save his beloved gaming corner from the ruthless mega corporation, Fun Fun Co, who have infiltrated Gilly’s — and consequently, the game — with a malicious virus.

This was entirely new professional and creative territory for me. A bit daunting, to say the least! But any insecurities or fears I had were quickly assuaged in my confidence in the project. In my writing partner, James, I had a collaborator whom I trust, who makes the writing process easy and enjoyable. And I’m so indebted to the team at Illfonic for not just the opportunity, but the chance to grow and learn within this medium. There’s the old adage in this business, to “surround yourself with people who are better than you,” and the team at Illfonic are just that; extremely talented, experienced, and dedicated to making the best product possible. Our writing was a small contribution to what made this game as fantastic as it is.

In addition to writing, I was also given the opportunity to voice a character in the game — Ruck! Small in stature, she’s a commanding presence and leader of the WarDawgz, one of the many gangs of Super City that band together in support of Gilly. So listen for her in-game!

Arcadegeddon is available in Early Access on the PS5 and EGS.

Psychonauts 2: Rich Mom for GOTY

Art by Jeff Delgado

In 2015, ten years following the release of the critically acclaimed Psychonauts, game studio Double Fine announced that a long-awaited sequel was in development. I was fortunate enough to be present at the Microsoft Theater (Game Awards) alongside my husband, James when this news broke. Since the first Psychonauts game, James — a die-hard fan — has vocally advocated for and sung the merits of this often overlooked masterpiece. Little did he know that his zealous fandom and championing would lead a crowdsourced campaign for him to have a voice role in Psychonauts 2. James jokingly offered to voice any character available — “even a toilet”.

The team at Double Fine are as generous as they are talented, and offered James a much larger role than a sentient porcelain bowl. Even more, they offered ME a chance to voice a character alongside him, which was truly surreal and humbling.

Recording VO for Rich Mom and Dad was extremely fun, and the team at Double Fine was so supportive and kind during the process. Double Fine is without a doubt a comedic giant in the games industry; not only was it a true pleasure to perform their words, but an honor to be part of such a special game.

Psychonauts 2 is now available to play on PS4/Xbox/PC/Mac
